Drink Dictionary: Letter C



Campari: A bright red-orange 48-proof bitter spirit.

Canadian Whisky: A whisky mainly made of rye, usually weaker than American whiskeys, as would be expected.

Cayenne Pepper: A flaming-hot spice. Seriously, this stuff will burn the fat right off your body, and steam the sweat right out of your pores.

Champagne: Sparkling wine. Technically it refers only to sparkling wine from the Champagne region of France, but colloquially it will be used to describe all sparkling wines.

Chartreuse: An herb liqueur that comes in Green and Yellow varieties.

Chocolate: A favorite food of Americans which derives its flavor from that of the cocoa bean.

Cider: An alcoholic drink made from the fermentation of apple juice. You can have different varieties (strong, dry, medium, sweet), each having a different alcohol content.

Cinnamon: An aromatic red spice. When ignited, it sparkles (as you will see if you try some flaming shooters).

Citrus: An adjective used to describe objects containing properties similar to oranges, lemons, limes, and often pineapple. Citrus Vodka, for example, is a tart and tangy vodka.

Club Soda: A clear, carbonated, flavoless soda used mainly for mixed drinks.

Cocoa Cream: A cocoa-flavoured liqueur made from cacao beans and coming in between 50-60 proof. Godiva Liqueur is an example.

Coconut Essence: Liquid extract of the coconut 'meat'. The real stuff is expensive but good; the artificial stuff is cheaper, but tastes worse. Choose your poison.

Cognac: All cognacs are brandies, but not all brandies are cognacs. Cognacs are brandies made from a grape that grows only in Cognac, France. VSOP means Very Special Old Pale, while XO means eXtra Old.

Cointreau: An 80-proof orange brandy liqueur.

Collins Mix: A sugary yet bitter mix.

Courvoisier: The most famous Cognac brand; Busta Rhymes passes this.

Cream: The fatty part of a cow's whole milk which rises to the top. It's high calorie and tastes amazing.

Creme De Cafe: A brown, sweetened liqueur made from coffee extract, and weighing in at between 50 and 60 proof.

Creme De Cassis: A blackcurrant-liqueur between 40-50 proof.

Creme De Framboise: A raspberry liqueur.

Creme De Menthe: A peppermint-flavored liqueur which is 60 proof.

Crown Royal: A very famous, expensive brand of blended Canadian Whiskey. You can substitute other whiskeys in a mixed drink, but the drink will taste worse.

Crystal Light: A cheap, gross, New Jersey-made chemical powder used to make low-cal lemonade.

Curacao: An orange-flavored liqueur made from dried orange peel. It is available in various colors to make mixed drinks more festive.

Cynar: An artichoke-flavored aperitif.
