Drink Dictionary: Letter A

Absinthe: A high-proof alcohol that tastes like licorice and is infused with wormwood. Wormwood contains a neurotoxin, which is transferred to the alcohol during the infusion process. The neurotoxin confers hallucinogenic properties onto the drink, which became famous due to its use by artists, most notably Pablo Picasso. However, due to its toxicity, absinthe was banned in the early 1900s. It is now available in a milder form, Pastis. Full-strength absinthe is only sold in Romania; it cannot be bought even in such lawless places as Paraguay. Modern alcohol that claims to be absinthe is, in fact, nothing more than absinthe-flavored alcohol, and contains no wormwood.

Advocaat: A liqueur that hails from the Netherlands and is comprised of a creamy and high-calorie blend of sugar, vanilla, egg yolks, and brandy. It is typically between 30 and 40 proof.

After Shock: A flavored liqueur backed by a smart marketing department. The drink tastes like a supersaturated solution of peppermint and cinnamon.

Agavero: Not a brand of tequila, but a blended tequila with an added touch: essence of Damiana flower. This is a purported aphrodisiac, but somebody as popular as yourself surely doesn't need an aphrodisiac to woo a partner into bed, right?

Aguardiente: A 76-proof alcohol made from Mexican sugarcane.

Ale: A malt beer flavored with hops. Alternatively, this term is used to describe any pale or blond beer.

Alize: A passion fruit flavored liqueur that comes in different flavors. It's pimp because Tupac Shakur always talked about it in his songs (think Thug Passion).

Allspice: Allspice consists of ground-up seeds of a specific and oddly-named tree. It has a spicy, cinnamon-nutmegy flavor.

Almond Extract: Liquid essence of almond. The real stuff is much better than fake extracts, so do yourself a favor and spend the extra $0.30. Ahh, wait, you'll be mixing this with booze. I take that back.

Amaretto: A liqueur with a smooth almond flavor.

Angostura Bitters: A two-centuries-old type of bitter tonic used frequently in aperitifs.

Anis: A licorice-flavored liqueur which derives its flavor from the anise seed. It is the active flavorant of modern Absinthe.

Anisette: Like Anis, but sweetened.

Applejack: A brandy made from distillate of apple cider.

Apry: A liqueur produced by fermenting macerated apricos and then sweetening with brandy.

Aquavit: A spirit distilled from grains and flavored with caraway and other seeds.
